Four siblings live with their blind mother in a villa in the Apennine Mountains in the Italian region of Emilia: Leone is mentally retarded; Alessandro suffers from epilepsy and has vivid dreams; Giulia is seemingly normal, but is in fact attracted to her brother, Augusto. Alessandro decides to free Augusto of the \u201cabnormal\u201d part of the family. He kills his mother first and then Leone as well, trusting in Giulia\u2019s complicity. The astonishing and violent debut from Marco Bellocchio was a gleaming ice pick in the eye of bourgeois family values and Catholic morality.<\/p>\n

DIRECTOR’S COMMENTS<\/h3>\n

I wanted to tell a very personal story in which I could recognise myself. I thought about a theme that threaded through my adolescence, the unhappy side of family life \u2013 featuring people like my brother, Paolo, who destroyed all possibility of happiness at home and made me hide myself away. There was this protagonist at the centre who wants to stay in the family and dominate it by getting rid of the brothers who are flawed and who are not productive. Then I created other characters, the mother inparticular. Certain things are drawn from my family, others from my imagination. I also drew from my culture, and a little from surrealism, literature, and from what my life had become. That\u2019s how the story came into being.<\/p>\n

NOTE DI REGIA<\/h3>

Volevo raccontare una storia molto personale, nella quale potessi riconoscermi. Pensai a un tema che aveva attraversato la mia adolescenza, quell\u2019aspetto infelice della vita di famiglia in cui alcuni, soprattutto mio fratello Paolo, distruggevano ogni possibilit\u00e0 di gioia, obbligandomi a nascondermi. In partenza c\u2019era il protagonista, che vuole restare in famiglia e dominarla eliminando i fratelli \u2018imperfetti\u2019 o improduttivi. Poi ho costruito gli altri personaggi, in particolare la madre. Alcune cose venivano dalla mia famiglia, altre erano frutto di fantasia. Ho attinto anche alla mia cultura, un po\u2019 al surrealismo, un po\u2019 alla letteratura, un po\u2019 a quel che era diventata la mia vita. La storia \u00e8 nata cos\u00ec.<\/p>
