Davide is a thirty-something with a passion for books—he doesn’t read many, but he sells them in a square in Rome. His most loyal customer, Elsa, is also his accomplice; she supplies him with secondhand volumes and showers him with affection and tenderness.
But everything changes on an otherwise ordinary day: out of nowhere on the street, a young North African boy is “delivered” to Davide like a parcel. The boy refuses to leave his side, silently following him around like a loyal puppy.
An accident leads to a frantic rush to the hospital, leaving the little stranger hovering between life and death. This plunges Davide into a personal hell of reticence, remorse, and profound bewilderment.
One night, in the forbidden refuge of the emergency room, Davide meets Aminah, who has just arrived from Algeria on a migrant boat. She is a teenager—drenched by the rain, trembling, terrified, and visibly pregnant. Davide has no choice but to offer her hospitality in his home.

He protests in vain, but ultimately gives in, whether out of generosity or weakness. His home is no longer just his own; it becomes a sanctuary for those without a roof to protect them, the many who sleep under bridges or on street corners.
When complaints from his neighbors land him in jail for aiding illegal immigration, Davide is forced to fully endure an odyssey that is not just personal, but one that upends the feelings of everyone around him.
